A one day tour of approx 160 miles (257 km). Starting at Halpins Hotel in, Kilkee your route along the West Coast takes you, via Lahinch, to the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher. Rising sheer above the sea to nearly 700 feet and extending about 5 miles along the coast, they provide magnificent views - especially from O'Brien's Tower at the northern end and from Hag's Head at the southern end. On a clear day the Aran Islands are visible from the cliffs. Drive onwards through Doolin and Lahinch and experience the bare limestone hills of the Burren Country of North Clare, a botanist's paradise in spring. Below the scarred surface of this landscape is the most remarkable assemblage of diverse types of flora in Ireland, and spectacular caves, streams and potholes. Poulnabrone Dolmen, a megalithic monument dating from about 2,500 BC, is a noted Burren feature. Two miles south-east of Ballyvaughan is Aillwee Cave in one of the most beautiful parts of the Burren. The cave was formed millions of years ago and is now developed to allow guided tours. Entry is through the award winning visitor centre built into the hillside. Continue on to Bealaclugga, before heading southwards through Turlough and Carran. At Leamaneh Castle, turn for Kilfenora and visit the Burren Display Centre. Head for Kilnahoy and Corofin visiting Clare Heritage Centre. Drive by Tulla and Broadford to Limerick, a graceful and historic city on the banks of the river Shannon. Visit King John's Castle, the Treaty Stone and St. Mary's Cathedral before continuing on to the lively town of Ennis. The final leg of the journey brings you southwest and back towards Kilrush and Kilkee and Halpins Hotel. |
