A one day tour of approx. 110 miles (177 km). Leave Dublin, after spending the night in the Aberdeen Lodge, via the suburb of Rathfarnham, 4 miles south of the city. Drive via Glencullen, Kilternan and The Scalp into Enniskerry - one of the prettiest villages in Ireland. From here you can visit Powerscourt Demesne and Gardens, which include the highest waterfall in the British Isles. Continue to Sally Gap, a notable crossroads situated between Kippure Mountain and the Djouce Mountain, where the road leads to Glendalough, by Glenmacnass and Laragh. Have a look around Glendalough, one of the most picturesque glens of Co. Wicklow, celebrated equally for its beauty as for its historical and archaeological interest. This valley holds extensive ruins of the 6th century Irish monastery of St. Kevin. Drive on through Laragh, by the military road to Rathdrum. Head south by the Vale of Avoca, made famous by Thomas Moores poem "the Meeting of the Waters, into Arklow, a popular holiday centre. From Arklow drive north to Wicklow where you can admire the view over the bay. Ashford is the next village on your route-close by the beautiful Mount Usher Gardens with countless varieties of trees, plants and shrubs, including subtropical species. These gardens are open from March to September. Move on through the rugged Devil's Glen to Newtownmountkennedy, Delgany and into the attractive resort of Greystones. Head back through Delgany to the Glen of the Downs, where a nature trail has been laid out through the state forest, on to Kilmacanogue (from where you can climb the great Sugar Loaf Mountain) and into Bray and visit the National Aquarium. From this fine resort at the base of Bray Head take the route to Killiney and the Vico Road to Dalkey enjoying the superb views of Killiney Bay. Follow the coast road to Sandycove, just south of Dun Laoghaire, and visit the Martello Tower where James Joyce once lived. Today it is open to the public as a Joyce Museum. Finally return to the Aberdeen Lodge. |
